I agree with K'ledgeBldr here - I really am not a fan of the double-backsplash as I call it.
Count me in with that group. I hate, hate, hate when people do that double backsplash thing. Pick one or the other - not both. They’re two different kinds of backsplashes and should not be combined. Easiest and fastest way to tell a pro vs. DIY job - the double backsplash.
I like the cabinets, its not fancy but its not horrible that it needs to be changed. I would agree with others on
1) painting the wall &/or adding backsplash
What's a double backsplash? Do you mean when there's a Formica-type countertop with integral rollup onto the wall, and people put tile above that? I don't see anything wrong with that, as long as the tile is plain tile. Or is it something else?

That is what they mean. The general preference is one or the other. Either run the formica (or granite whatever the countertop material is) all the way up the wall or not at all.
