My wife and I are struggling with choosing an optimal furniture layout for the combination living room/dining room in our new rented house.
USE:
My wife and I want to use the room as both a living rom and small dining room.
For dining, we would like to comfortably accommodate up to four people easily, but it will just be the two of us (and baby due next month and dog) most of the time.
We do not need to put a TV in the room as we have another space for the TV/stereo.
OTHER DETAILS:
-rustic hardwood floors, neutral very slightly off-white walls
-the room is south facing and gets lots of light through the bay windows and hopper window in the upper right corner of the Magic Plan diagram.
-the *non*-working fireplace has rectangular tile flooring which extends into the room by only 43cm, so not nearly as much as the figure in the MagicPlan diagram implies
-the two small walls adjacent to the fireplace have built in floor-to-ceiling bookshelfs. They are recessed and so don’t take up any floor space.
-we removed the door from the entrance; immediately on the wall to the right of the entrance is a floor-to-ceiling water heater that is 63cm wide by 4 cm deep
ATTACHED DIAGRAM:
I've attached a MagicPlan diagram of the room for reference with three different images:
-the top image is blank with just measurements
-the middle is how it is arranged currently
-the bottom is just one possibility we came up with to help get the ideas flowing
Thank you for your help and please let us know if you have any questions!
I think placing the dining table near a window is much more pleasant then having up against the wall. I am not very good at imagining a room without an actual picture of the room, light and furniture but I can imagine having a cup of coffee at the table and watching the sun come up.
I would place the couch facing the fireplace, and pooch, where your bike is at and re arrange the carpet to reflect a cozy niche. Get another plush comfy chair, love seat against that other wall.
Center the table a bit away from the window.
What a cute room. Personally, and especially because you'll have the baby coming, I'd set it up in a way that gives me the most space while still being functional. I actually moved my furniture around my LR multiple times (I also have a LR/DR combo) until I found a set-up I liked the best. I'm the kind of person who has to SEE it, since I can't picture things in my head very well.
