Awhile ago I bought this TV console ...

... then I decided I wanted one with a top to "frame" the TV and some upper "slots" for components too so I bought a different one. However, I still like this cabinet and would like to use it somewhere! So I was thinking of using it as a console behind a sofa in my living room. I have 2 identical sofas facing each other, perpendicular to a fireplace. This cabinet (which is 52" wide by 24" high by 16" deep) would go in back of the furthest sofa (i.e., you wouldn't see it from the entry to the living room -- the room is 23'6" long so it's pretty big). I would probably put baskets on the shelves and use them for misc. storage (e.g., throw blankets, blank videotapes/DVDs, etc.). Note, there will still be plenty of room even with this 16"-deep cabinet -- the sofa's back "curves in" so this cabinet would only need about 10" of floor space, and there would be at least 4' of walking room between it and a bookcase on the far wall (the bookcase and this cabinet would face each other).

Any thoughts on if this could work? Or would it look odd?

Sounds like a great idea, and looks like plenty of storage!

Thanks, Pitt Chick -- I moved in 7 months ago but STILL have not painted or put pictures up in the living room -- I am so intimidated by that room and am constantly second-guessing myself! You made me feel better!

If it doesn't work there, it can go into a bedroom, or office, or entry.
It seems to be a versatile piece.

Seven months already!?! That went fast.

I think it would look great - and you could still put some sort of a lamp on it to illuminate the area. It is a beautiful piece - is your other one black as well? Everyone can use extra storage, and besides, it's you house. You can put anything you want to in it.....but I couldn't live with bare walls for 7 months. Stop second guessing -what I have seen in the pics you have posted always looks warm and inviting. Go for it, sooner rather than later!!!!! And have some fun - the worst that can happen is you don't like it and you start over.

You are ALL right (and will be rep'd if I can!), but I am so intimidated by that room! I will be on winter break for about a month starting next week (or as soon as I can get all my grading done), so hopefully I will be able to DO something with the living room (and maybe even POST PHOTOS, what a thought, lol!).

CFoulke, my other "console" (i.e. behind the other sofa, the one you can see when you enter the room) is a long, low bookcase, and it is also black. The end tables around the sofas are also black (well, 2 are deep red, but they will be painted black), while the bookcases are oak (OK, oak-look) and the piano (actually a keyboard but it looks like a piano) is a mahogany color. The sofas are a deep olive green (which I love) and everything goes together nicely without being too "matchy" (which I don't really care for). There's really too much furniture in the room, but there's still lots of "walking around" room, and besides, I have a couple thousand books so I need a ton of bookcases/etc.

Anyway, thanks so much for the replies, they made me feel better!

It should look nice. You can always unscrew the doors and see if it looks less like a tv stand.

It would look terrible without the doors.
