I don't think it looks bad the way it is, but if you did travertine or marble, what color are you thinking? I would lean toward travertine with more of a matte finish, since you have the shiny thing going on on the floor. You need some contrast at least for the focal point of your fireplace.
If you insist on tiling it, tile it with a none shiney stone. And don't do white or off-white.
It's a vocal point---it is supposed to stand out and look different, not blend in and disappear.
