I would appreciate any recommendations for a good store (brick and mortar or online) that sells elegant, high quality, yet still somehow affrordable chandeliers for the dining room.
We are looking at something traditional, ideally of crystal.
When we moved into our current house, we needed several lighting fixtures - a chandelier in the dining room, a hanging light fixture in the foyer and a hanging light fixture over the breakfast table. We bought the dining room chandelier from a local lighting store - I could not find anything on line that I liked that was in my price range (under $1500). The kitchen light fixture I found in the lighting store and knew it was overpriced, so I went online and found the same light fixture and saved over $125 by ordering it online - same with the large pendant light in the foyer - saved a ton by buying it online and could not find it locally.
So, do your research - start by going to your local lighting stores, taking note of manufacturers and prices and then go online to see if you can beat the prices and find the same or similar fixture. One thing to remember though - it is much more difficult to return something that you have bought online.
My friend has a gorgeous home - when she was looking for a crystal chandelier for her kitchen, she found the perfect one on clearance at Lowes. When you see that chandelier in her kitchen, you would never guess that it came from Lowes.
I usually include Overstock.com in my searchs. I always check ebay, too and craigslist .... these along with boutique online sites and stores. Never can tell where the best price v. item shows up. Good luck.
I got my chandelier at Overstock.com. Paid $36 for bronze hardware with a beautiful opaque glass shade. Not what you asked for, but they have plenty of crystal, too. I installed mine about two years ago and haven't had a bit of trouble with it.
Syracusa, I'm not sure what your budget is but I thought these chandeliers were interesting - a bit more transitional than traditional, although there are a few of those too.
I think you would prefer to go and look in person..I'm that way too, but around here the lighting stores are so expensive and the home improvement stores are so unoriginal, that I go for online lighting most of the time.
