Is there anything unusual or stylistically unacceptable about having different stains (same wood and style, but different stains) on the bathroom and kitchen cabinets?

Thanks.

Nope. In fact it would be ok to have totally different cabinets.

The only time I see the super matchy-matchy look tends to be in entry-level tract homes. The builder just puts in whatever he can get for the lowest price.

I agree. Our house is newer and the bathroom cabinets and kitchen cabinets are the same or were. The previous owners painted the kitchen cabinets. They had a professional do it so I did not notice until I climbed under the sink and realized they were the exact same as the bathroom. We plan to change things out eventually or I might just paint the bathroom cabinets as well. I like variety.

Only if they're both in the same room.

I like matching cabinets throughout. Not necessarily the same color or stain, but the same style door.

However, the style of the door is totally dependent on the style of the house for me.

I got a chuckle out of this. I think most zoning laws prohibit bathrooms in kitchens these days.

If the powder room is not that far from the kitchen and would get noticed more, I think the same would look good.
But if it is a good distance from the kitchen then I don't think it should matter.
Depends on personal taste, you might want a type of theme for the bathroom, but not in the kitchen.....

I ordered the cherry cabs for the kitchen and natural maple for the bathrooms (same style of cabinet though). Thanks all for your input.

I'm in the camp that doesn't like kitchens and bathrooms to totally match. I don't want to be reminded of the bathroom when I am in the kitchen, or vice versa..
