the thing with ovie is that he is the star of that team. i personnally believe that pavel datsyuk is the best player in the league right now. if he played for a below average team, he would shine even brighter.
i think it goes to show you how good he is when there are more than a couple solid players on the team. he works his tail off and still is the leading scorer on the wings, even though zetterberg, hossa, and franzen are on the same team.

amazing...
Datsyuk may be the most creative in the league. Just wish he would shoot more. Then again, if he played different than he does he might not be so good. Who am I to coach?
The only Gretzky record that is remotely in reach is his career goals scored.
I don't see any player today:
scoring 92+ goals in a season
scoring more assists in a season or in their career
scoring more points in a season or in their career
There are a ton of other records that derive from those I just listed above. A few might be reachable, but some are just fluky (scoring 4 goals in a period).
The game is vastly different than it used to be back in Gretzky's day. As good as Ovechkin, Malkin, etc might be, numbers-wise they definitely won't hold a candle to Gretzky. But, the question would then remain... how would Gretzky fare in today's hockey world?
I think Wayne would be just as good today. Remember they did away with the 4 on 4 because the oilers flourished with the open ice. And the league is a bit watered down with the additional teams that did not exist back then.
I thought this question was already settled. Didn't Bettman already proclaim Crosby = Gretzky and Malkin=Messier?
