I would guess that most people other than Blackhawk fans have no idea about the history of the team name. So, why not add a space and call them the Black Hawks? The logo can be a black hawk.

That said, I got a big laugh from the intramural team that called itself the "Fightin' Whities". You can still see their logo online.

Yep. The team was named for the 86th infantry division in WWI, called Blackhawk Division.

Yes, that's correct. Black Hawk played a significant role in the history of the state of Illinois. I don't see how people find it offensive. They are the "Black Hawks" which are the infantry division.

It comes down to financial implications. The Redskins name only changed because they wanted to build a stadium in DC proper. The Indians weren’t selling any merchandise outside of Cleveland and that might change with a new team name. If the Blackhawks aren’t seeing any monetary loss from their name (which they shouldn’t), they’ll be fine.
