Just imagine if they had been run competently over the last 12 years or so.

Houston has a bit of a "frontrunner" problem but then again so does the entire NBA which embraces and encourages that culture. Put a winner in here, like the Stars did with Dallas, and it works.

I wouldn't include Saskatoon or Regina in that list - they simply don't have the population to support it. They're only hovering around 200,000 each, not enough for a major market team.
Halifax is on the line, but maybe.....
Winnipeg, well, their local economy is in the gutter. 85% of houses are under $185,000 and falling. Not a good scene right now.

Your 1-3 will not happen. Most of the southern teams are having problems. Hockey will return to the north with Canada getting more teams, again. Seattle won't because Vancouver will cry. Conn. will not get a team unless the Islanders relocate. Conn. is a subburb of NYC. I would love to see Portland get a team, since I live in the City of Roses. We just got an MLS team (which has nearly sold out it season tickets), told minor league baseball to go find a new home, and have a very successful Junior Hockey team. Portland has a tremendous amount relocated Northeasterners, Chicagoans, and Coloradoans. And we have two Arenas right next to each other that host hockey games. We will gladly take Dallas. Ha ha.

So does the South.

But the south doesn't have relocators that like winter...The junior hockey here in Portland has an average attendance of 6000 and since Christmas, an average of 10,000.

Wow, is hockey that big in Portland? How much does the arena hold?

I think 30 is a good, round number for the NHL and NBA, unless they wanted to go to 32 like the NBA. If any league, I was really hoping the MLB would expand to 32. (North, West, South, East divisions for both NL and AL)

The MLB doesn't have the attendance to expand. The NHL should contract at least two teams, if not four. They would then probably have to whittle down their postseason but that's fine.

The NHL should have never gotten greedy and expanded to 30 teams in the first place. For instance, who really thinks Florida needs two teams? Move or contract the Panthers. I live near Atlanta and try and support the Thrashers but man I'm not sure hockey's working here in Atlanta. Phoenix isn't working.

Any chance that a Winnipeg team would not take the Jets name back? Or take the name of Manitoba?

What about Quebec and the Nordiques?
