I think it would work out real well. Have a 10 day summer league in say, Toronto and Los Angeles or Minnesota and Vancouver, well you get the idea....

Lots of hockey players play in international leagues during the off-season.

NHL teams have their own summer camps and workouts that are mandatory for all or most of the new draft picks, younger players and new players to the team. So in essence this is the equalivent of the nba summer league. Most or all of the guys that play in Vegas during the summer in the NBA are fresh draft picks or really young/new undeveloped talent. The NHL team that is in my market has already been holding practices and scrimmages and workouts with the coach since the beginning of July. They work on plays and different scenarios like PP's, PK's and Penalty Shots and drills, all the works. They hold scrimmages amoungst themselves but go really light on things like checking and blocking shots all out etc. as not to get injured by another teammate before the season even starts. They play enough "warmup" games against other teams in the NHL preseason to get ready for the full speed of the regular season, so i don't think a summer league in the NHL is even worth it or would be successful considering what i already explained earlier in my post. Another point is i wouldn't want my favorite team risking the health of it's new high draft picks to play in a couple of exibition games that mean squat. I mean what happens if you end up playing one of your arch rivals in one of these "summer league" games and a tough guy decides to take a cheap shot on your teams number 1 draft pick or best rookie or player from the season before and he tears his acl or something and is out most of the regular season. Suddenly the NHL "summer league" dosen't look so good anymore in my opinion.

Cheap shots and some clown trying to make a name for himself, can't happen in an NBA summer league game?

I think it would just bring in some more $ for the NHL. I'm curious to see how much $ the NBA makes off their Las Vegas games and I think Orlando has a summer league too.
Salt Lake used to have one.

Injuries could still happen in Vegas or Orlando in the NBA summer league, but the risk would be far less because you don't have guys skating at each other full speed hitting each other and slashing/high sticking with their sticks, blocking shots with their faces, players fighting etc. An NHL summer league would not be a success in my opinion. You would have teams that wouldn't want to be involved and players that wouldn't want to etc. I think the only reason the NBA summer league works is because Vegas and Orlando are both good cities for it because there are millions of tourists there each year and Vegas dosen't have a pro team so the residents come out to see a little pro action. I can't think of a city that would be as successful in hosting the hockey league you are suggesting except maybe NYC but then you have the high costs of renting facilities for games etc. Personally i'm a big NHL fan but if there were a summer league i would have little to no interest in it much like most of the preseason. I would rather have my team back home practicing amoungst themselves getting ready for the pre-season which offers plenty of warm up time for the regular season. Pro athletes already complain about how they have to play multiple pre-season games as it is, why add more. It's a nice idea and props to you for thinking about it but i just don't see it happening.
