People called Gretzky and Mario whiners for years too. I remember people saying that Gretzky couldn't play without Marty McSorley as his bodyguard. Mario once called the NHL a "garage league" because of how the refs ignored the obstruction and cheap stuff.
Funny thing though - Crosby has never had a diving call in his NHL career while many other players have, but they aren't called divers as a result.
He was just 18 when he first played NHL hockey and has been the target of every single team's top defensive lines. I'm quite sure he's been on the receiving end of many a cheap-shot along the way. He's probably got a right to complain when refs turn a blind eye.
