Sewing and knitting are both great skills to have. Yes, the materials may be more expensive than the cheap clothes at Walmart, but your new garments will last you much longer and therefore, it's a greater return on investment.

Very Pink Knits has a great youtube channel for knitting. I refer to them before all others.

I learned the knit stitch, then the purl stitch and practiced about 3 or 4 days. Then I found a simple sweater pattern and my first project was that sweater. It turned out wonderful, and I wore it for about 5 years. Unfortunately, I chose cheap synthetic yarn and the sweater pilled very badly through the years. Otherwise, I'd still be wearing it.
