Does anyone know why the Friday after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday? My wife loves this day as she shops and shops. I usually don't hear her get out of bed and I don't see her 'til early evening.
It's from accounting. It was traditional for positive figures to be written in black ink and negative figures in red ink.
Many stores are unprofitable, or "in the red", most of the year, but good sales in the Christmas season can put them "in the black", or profitable, for the year. Today is the day that stores hope to become profitable.
So, thats why my mom and her sisters went shopping today. She said something about Black Friday, but i hade no idea what it meant. Well, now i know. Is there usually sales going on Black Friday??? Im just wondering. My mom never told me why we called it Black Friday or even what it is. Now i kind of know.

There is also Black Monday, which just began last year I believe. The online world's version of Black Friday. It's nice because you don't have to deal with all the crazy people! A lot of online retailers offer free shipping that day, along with great discounts. Google Black Monday or Black Friday to see the type of deals out there.
Black Friday is a term newly coined, in the past decade or so, by anti-consumer groups going out and picketing malls to encourage people to not waste so much of their money and our national wealth. buying junk products for people that don't want them and don't need them and would never have bought them for themselves.
I read a few days ago that Black Friday 2008 increased sales by 1%, Black Monday by 15%.
