The iPhone, Facebook, and YouTube are definitely era defining. And they all came into being or became mainstream in 2006-2007.
I graduated from college in 2006 and I remembered lugging a 8lb laptop around, a moto razr, and looking info up online was still very raw. Then only a year later I saw a huge shift in technology, laptop came down to sub 5lb, smartphones, and the Internet became much more populous.
Fashion wise the late 90s and early 2000s were all about baggy or loose fitting. I remember in high school always buying clothes XL even though I would fit a small. Kids that didnt sport baggy were the nerds. Now I'm all about slim fit and skinny jeans. I gotta say the style nowadays is much cleaner.
To me the 90s was defined by Bill Clinton and so it didn't start until 1993 and probably ended with 9/11. 2001-2006 was a transitioning period, then cmes 2007 to the present. So I guess the 2000s was very short.

I probably meant 2005 was the most purely '00s year. 2004-2005 school year had the least '90s overhang in the whole 2000-2005 period, and it also had very few to absolute no hints of what would become the '10s influence. 2005-2006 school year didn't really have any straight ties to the '10s either, but in comparison to the preceding school year had enough hints of the late '00s (which is very vaguely but still a fraction of the '10s influence) like emo, YouTube, MySpace peaking, cell phones starting to look a bit more modern and fresh (albeit not progressing straight into smartphones like what we have today). Though in early 2006, the atmosphere was still full-on '00s, with lots of genuinely mid-'00s stuff and even some early '00s stuff still existing in some form.
2007-present - iPhones, iPads, lightweight notebook (MacBook Air, Chromebook, Surface Book), housing bust-boom, App economy ( Uber, Snapchat, Square), gigabit Internet or close to it, 3G-LTE, cloud, Obama.
I think 2007 was still pretty '00s. It doesn't share a lot in common with today...not much of what was popular then is popular now, or even vaguely popular. Musically, hip-hop, emo punk, RnB-oriented pop and even post-grunge were all the absolutely biggest things in 2007. The atmosphere was very un-'10s. There was definitely one atmosphere change in the 2006-07 school year, another one in 2008 and also another one through the 2009-10 school year. Technologically, maybe it was the '10s, but even then... flip phones were absolute king, "cloud" was still unknown to many people, and broadband was way bigger than Wi-Fi. In a lot ways, it does really seem almost as close to the '90s as to now. Also, the economy was booming then, it was pre-recession. To many people, the '10s began in 2009. Though, I do admit 2007 was significantly less '00s than 2006, though still almost totally '00s, whereas 2008 had some '10s elements. I think of the late '06-mid '08 period as its own.
Also, 2007 had a more '00sish sense of cool, to the hip/musical subculture people, and the humor and general taste then were waaay more '00s.

that's your opinion, but the 90's was the beginning of the end of America as we know it, the 80's were the last real times in my opinion, at least we had politicially incorrectness and everyone had a good time, god I miss the smurfs cartoon, cartoons were so special back then, unlike now.

Will the 90s did have some redeeming qualities. Better TV shows and better movies for starters. The real beginning of the end started in 2008, I think.
