there was a significant reduction in 1974-1976 in US-deaths from all causes
(dominated by cardiovascular, respiratory - not seen in cancer, accidents).
And it was long-lasting, not that some old, sick people's death was just delayed
and they died in the following years.

possible reasons (ideas)
1974 oil crisis,watergate,HFCS-sweeteners,air-pollution-reduction,
Vietnam-refugees,reorganisation of nursing homes,improvements
in treating critical cardiovascular cases,

(I keep editing this first post ...adding charts, links)

I had a thread here with more charts:
http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=154522

compare several countries :

Canada e.g. maybe had the same deaths-decline some years later,
but this is also less pronounced and not so clear.

It's even clearer in the North-East, and i.e. New York,
while Florida,California,Texas only had a small decline:

I see another death-decline in USA in those born between ~1893 and 1898
and another one in those born between ~1923 and 1933

That could mean that some new measures were introduced to "treat" those born in ~1893
and those measures were continuously increased for those born until 1898, when they
reached the maximum and no further improvements happened.
And these measures helped them to survive when they were 50 or older.
Similar for 1923.1933

Vaccination ? Better school ? Better jobs ?
War ? (but it's similar in males and females)
immunization by circulating pathogens ? flu-strains ?
change in nutrition habits ? vitamins ?

but see, how the "valley" moves towards the bottom right

over the years, decades it was always the ~1898 , ~1933 cohorts that did better

these are total deaths, not death-rates, so it could be smaller populations
in these age-groups - I should check this
fewer people born in these years ?

ahh, yes, I should have checked this before posting:

Weren't those the years in which the WWII vets started to retire en masse? Were they in any better health?

I don't know. But retiring wouldn't imply fewer deaths especially from
cardiovascular causes and diabetes and especially in the >80y group
and in females as well as in males

It's not a mystery. None of your statistics are controlled for using per capita among the age groups. The US birth rate experienced dips in both of the time periods you are calling out as being "cohorts with lower death rates". Less people died among those cohorts because there were less people born into those cohorts. The annual death rate per capita has been declining gradually for some time in the US.

wonder: Multiple Cause of Death, 1999-2010 Request

Toronto should be similar to NY,PA,OH,MI ?!
unless the reason is political, changes in nursing homes, treatments or such.
