My neighbor says her kids have the 5th disease. What is that? I've never heard of it, is it contagious???

Yes, one of the 5 viral diseases that produce a red rash, dangerous if you're pregnant. It looks like the child has "slapped cheeks".

I had it and it was almost over with before I knew what it was.
I just felt kind of tired for a day, and did have the red cheeks--but then it was over with.
The weird thing is, my kids never got it (but I am a preschool teacher and so get exposed to all kinds of stuff.)

I'm not being insensitive, but when my son was about 6 or 7 years old, he told me he thought he had 5th disease. Made me grin at the time

We had an outbreak at my school while I was pregnant, and I wasn't allowed to go back until it was gone. Very dangerous to pregnant women, and is very contagious to kids.

Both my daughters tested for having had it in bloodwork in their 20s and we never knew it -- seems like it was simultaneous with when they had chickenpox ( the school had both at the same time).

It is not good for any adult to get it.
