I am currently suffering from corneal abrasions on one eye. This has been one of the most terrifying and bothersome medical conditions I have ever had. I am under a doctor's care and see him every 2 or 3 days. He told me Friday that it would probably take another 2 weeks to be able to see improvement. I've been dealing with this for a week so far. I am on antibiotics, steroids and another antibacterial, soothing ointment at bedtime. He said that my eye appears like someone took sandpaper across it. Has anyone else suffered from this and how long did it take for you to heal?

Thanks in advance.

Hi SMG,
I've had a couple corneal abrasions and mine healed within 4-5 days. Sounds crazy but on 2 occassions, I was poked in the eye by the sharp, pointy leaf of my ex-dragon tree. It was a tough fight but it won. It had to find a new home.
Anyhow, after my eye doctor stopped laughing, he put a plain contact lens in my eye and covered it with a patch. The lens kept my eye from feeling gritty and from tearing up. Turns out the leaf of a dragon tree is poisonous, so my eye swelled shut. Had to go a full round of meds and a few uncomfortable days but I lived to tell the tale of how I lost a round with my own houseplant.

I know that you are terrified but everything will be okay if you have good medical care. My cornea was cut with serious abrasions about 25 years ago. Luckily I lived in Philly and was taken to Wills Eye Hospital. Both eyes were covered and stayed that way for several months. Daily visits to the hospital. At the time, the doctor put medication in my eyes. Now, 25 years later, I still use a nightly ointment to lubricate my eyes. You may find that you develop dry eye because of the abrasions. Ask your doctor what you can expect. I started using the ointment after the bandages came off because I kept seeing green halos on everything. Not trying to scare you. As I have gotten older, I rarely drive at night, but I think that is age more than anything. Don't panic and PM me if you have any questions.

I haven't but my son had a corneal ulcer from his contact lens. he had left his lenses in much too long and so developed the ulcer.

It took a few weeks of ointment and no contacts for it to heal. Scared me a lot more than it apparently did him!

Thank you for the replies. I went to the cornea specialist and the eye doctor yesterday and they said it would be at least four more weeks before I see improvement. They also found some involvement in my other eye. It's been two week and I can at least make out the Big "E" on the eye chart where I couldn't do that before. That is some encouragement. I asked the specialist how long until I am back to normal and he said I may never be back to where I was but within three months I will probably see maximum medical improvement. I'll never be able to wear contacts again but I will settle for seeing clearly again! One thing that he did tell me is that people over 40, women especially, should start using preservative free artificial tears at least once a day to help lubricate the eyes and prevent problems. I never knew that. Thanks again for your responses.

My newphew scratched the crap out of my eye a few years ago. It was so painful. I couldn't even open my eye. I remember having to take a series of eye drops and I think it did heal up within a week.

The only problem that I still have is that if I sleep in front of the fan or in a dry room, when I wake up in the morning, it's almost as if the scratch re-opens itself. Has anyone ever experienced this?

I am sorry to hear about your experience. My doctor told me that I will probably have to use eye lubrication for the rest of my life. As we age, females especially, experience less tears in the eyes and need help.
