Some time ago, my doctor was surprised that I was drinking 72 ounces of coffee a day. Basically, I was running the coffemaker each morning and finishing the carafe late at night. I didn't recognize any bad effects, not even sleeplessness, but the doctor didn't like it. Has anybody else been told this?

I was never told this and never did this. One cup for breakfast and that's it. Read about your adrenals and coffee consumption.

That is almost 7,000mg of caffeine (6,840mg to be exact) It's amazing that you are not bouncing off the walls

Up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That's roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola or two "energy shot" drinks. Keep in mind that the actual caffeine content in beverages varies widely, especially among energy drinks.

That would be about 9 cups/day - maybe a little less using a larger mug. That's in the neighborhood of 900 mg of caffeine for regular brewed coffee. It is typically recommended that you don't exceed 400 mg/day, but everyone is different. If you are suffering no ill effects, including on your heart rhythm and blood pressure, I wouldn't worry about it too much. But I would try to gradually get it down to about 4 cups/day.

While there once was all sorts of worry and hand-wringing about coffee and your heart, recent studies have shown conclusively that up to about 4 cups a day has a beneficial and protective effect. I know it does for me. In fact, I have proven time and time again that my first couple of cups in the morning or even later in the day after several hours of coffee "fasting" actually lowers my blood pressure.

Everything in moderation. 72 oz of coffee a day is not moderation

When you gotta go pee every 30 minutes all day long and into the evening then you know you've drank too much.

There is no such thing as too much coffee. So says the Crazee Cat Lady.

Did you read the article you quoted? Other sources say your figure of 7,000 mg. of caffeine is what would be TWICE what's in 72 oz. of ESPRESSO a day, not regular coffee!

OP is probably getting around 800 mg. a day - that's a lot but obviously not deadly. Cutting back would be wise though.

And just because 400 mg. is beneficial doesn't mean that 401 mg. is BAD for you - I won't speak to 800 mg. a day.

I was up to 2.4 L/day years ago. I was right next to the departmental coffee machine. I decided to measure one day and my mug was 400 ml and I was having 6 of them a day. It didn’t bother me at all...but everyone’s different. I was doing a lot of very fine work at that time too (ultramicrotomy, electron microscopy).
