To be more serious, I lost most of my sense of smell in the years following the 9/11 WTC attacks. I didn't notice it going, and it is a scary idea not to be able to smell gas or smoke. I can't tell if my apartment smells like cat box or garbage can or if something goes off in the refrigerator. Fortunately I'm married, so have someone I can ask. I had a friend who lost hers through recurring nasal polyps and scar tissue and she lived alone so would never light a candle, etc.
