I have RA and took prednisone in combination w/ methotrexate for more than 10 years. Besides the weight gain others have mentioned, I developed severe dental issues. No medical professional, including the dentist, ever said one word about the side effects of these meds on teeth and bones.
I was hospitalized 3 times for pneumonia and also had bad depression which basically disappeared once I weaned off the meds. Took quite awhile to get the weight off.
I really felt like, for me, the side effects of those meds were worse than the disease. I totally understand why you think your dad won't last another 3 years.
Best of luck to you and your dad.

I have taken Predisone off and on for about 8 years. I take it when my RA is in a pretty bad flare, and for a while I took a small dose daily.

It is almost like a wonder drug in bringing down the inflammation of the joints, but I never like being put on it. It blows me up.

I have been on the Methotrexate for years, tried Humira for a bit with good results. Then I moved and came across way too many doctors telling me I don't have RA. I am finally back with my initial Rheumatologist, though it takes me three hours to get to her office.

I am now back on Humira x3 weeks and hoping to have some relief soon.

I hope your dads health improves.....

I've taken it on and off for several years for allergies. I'm very fortunate I never gotten the "moon face" from it, but it does make me very hyper, I have to take sleeping pills to sleep and I am hungry all the time when I take it.

Another thing prednisone does is cause your appetite to hugely increase.
