Sorry for any visuals the title may conjure up, but this is something I have noticed on certain people lately... Every now and again I'll come across someone whose breath literally smells like CRAP. There are a few people I know who ALWAYS smell like this, no matter what they ate, time of day. Offering mints or gum doesn't help either. It makes it difficult to carry on conversations with them, and even harder to sit in the same car when they're talking.

None of these people are overweight, nor do they have any major illness that I know of. They're also young... teens to early 20's. What the heck IS this smell? Have you heard of poop breath?

Sound like they may have a decaying tooth...that creates a horrible odor that can't be masked!

Agree. Infections in the mouth smell HORRIBLE. Could be bad teeth, crowns, gums, many different things. No amount of mints is gonna cover it up, either.

Could be they need to floss. Could also be tonsil stones. Not just your two main tonsils but also on the tonsils that are on the very back of your tongue.

Wouldn't be surprised about rotting teeth. All those so called energy drinks and sodas are horrible on teeth. Combine that with cigarettes and poor diet and you have a bad situation. At work, I keep a tube of Vicks inhaler in my desk drawer. It's to get rid of horrible odors from my nose. Examples of bad odors I deal with include hospital patient feces and rotting flesh. You could try putting a dab of Vicks vapo-rub under your nose. If them chewing gum or sucking on breath mints doesn't help then the problem may be beyond the mouth. My dad had horrible breath for months before we found out he had stage 4 lung cancer. He died a few months later. We now think his breath was his cancer. Another source of bad breath is sinuses. A saline nasal rinse once or twice a day will usually clear that up in a few days. Switching from alcohol based mouthwash may also help. A cheap substitution is baking soda and water mouth rinse.

People who eat a lot of meat, and don't floss afterwards, will often have breath that mimics such a thing (feces).

If their teeth are spaced close together, it makes it even worse, because those particles can wedge in (sight unseen) hard to reach areas; thus creating a rotting flesh smell.

I know of an incident, where a couple had a two year old son who suddenly went from having regular fresh breath to rancid "death" breath.
They took the boy to the E.N.T. -who retrieved a small petrified green pea from up in the tot's nasal cavity. Mystery and problem...solved!

I agree that it could be sinuses. I have a problem with sinus drainage building up in my throat, and if I don't use a neti pot daily I will get horrible breath.

Another problem that causes awful breath is Mono, I doubt they would be walking around with Mono undetected but I know when all my kids had Mono 2 in high school one in college their breath was horrible!

Dehydration causes poopy breath as well. Perhaps if these are young people who are otherwise healthy, they just need to drink water. It seems like a lot of people have to have some sort of flavor or fizz to anything they drink. Also, drinking a lot of coffee makes one's breath stinky.

Rotting teeth, post nasal drip. mucus plug in the back of the throat. All of these.
A dentist can help with the first, the other two need nasal irrigation or a netti pot.
