You nailed it right there. She knows this is exactly what the public wants and will say whatever it takes to get their vote. My voice, your voice and some of the others here on the forum are consistent with getting people back to work sooner than later. But the majority, correction, VAST majority of the people in this state would like to keep things closed and people out of our state.
When you are getting rent relief, eviction moratorium, mortgage relief, $2,600 of tax free money every month on top of state UI benefits and pay that is in many cases higher than what you would get if you sat in traffic every day for hours and clocked in, you are not going to be in a rush to get back to normal.
Until the freebies go away, you won't have any luck convincing the masses here to save this economy. The vast majority of people care only for themselves and their family, and no one else - and that includes Hawaii's economy.
When the money runs out, that will be interesting to see. Many jobs people had are completely gone to never come back. Without an economy, without jobs, there is no revenue. With no revenue how does a government function? To not see the forest through the trees in any of this has me in awe.
Yep. Sadly, many seem to be very shortsighted in that regard. They are happy keeping things closed and accepting a little extra dough now, even if it means financial ruin for years to come down the line when overly generous unemployment benefits are not a thing.
That money will soon run out and then what? People are in for a rude awaking and hope they have some kind of contingency plan.

If I didn't have to deal with quarantine upon return I'd go. If the State made it a condition to avoid quarantine a test on arrival - I'd do it.
Josh Green stated at a news interview yesterday that state government (and he, I presume) are working up a plan to address the opening of travel. We'll see.
In the meantime, the virus transmission rate within our islands must be close to zero. I can't understand why
unrestricted inter-island travel by residents hasn't resumed/been announced.

Me too!. The Palazzo isn't reopening yet but the Venetian is. I'm still not anxious to encounter the virus but boredom is now overtaking caution!I would even be happy to fly to the Big Island or Oahu for a couple of days.
We took a drive out the Hana Hwy last week, not to go all the way to Hana, but just to get out. Just past Haiku we were stopped by the National Guard and Maui Police and told to turn around. Only locals could go further.

Discussion of this on HPR this AM. There simply aren’t enough tests available in state, or anywhere for that matter, to meet the demand that would be presented by the typical inbound passenger flight loads.
As a resident if you were able to secure a test in advance from your health care provider, if any, perhaps that would work.

A week ago, the state had the capability of 3,000 tests a day - so it has to be higher now. If we limited the tests to residents we shouldn't have any problem doing those tests.
