Thanks!

Last time I checked, you had to pay to see a teller at BoH. We have been with First Hawaiian for 8 years and have no complaints.

Bank of Hawaii is owned by a local Hawaii corporation, Bank of Hawaii Corp.

First Hawaiian Bank is owned by BancWest Corp which is owned by BNP Paribas which is French. Our experiences have been good with them.

Consider - American Savings Bank, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Industries, which also owns HELCO, and is locally owned. We picked this bank as our local bank.

After reading the other responses, I feel I have to say that we bank with BoH, and have done so happily ever since we bought our house. We do not pay to see a teller, the branches and ATMs are conveniently located in stores and other places, and we have not had any problems.

I'm not advocating for them v. First Hawaiian or American Savings. That's a choice that should be made based on your banking needs and who best serves them (product offerings, fees, locations, etc.).

Very funny, "kaimuki."

And for "SurfinGirl," "That's my bank!" is BANK OF HAWAII's consumer advertising tag.

FHB, definately, I like its history, I like that its founder(charles reed bishop)was a great philanthopist and did many wonderful things for Hawaii, and the good things he has done continue to benefit the state, and the Hawaiians.

Well, Hawaii National Bank is also on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Not so great if you're on Kauai, Lanai, or Molokai, though.

First Hawaiin has a practice that really burns me, though not quite enough to move, so far.

If you use on-line banking, when you send an on-line check to someone, FHB takes the money out of your account and puts it in theirs on the day you write the check on line, and the bank writes the check to the payee from their account. They have the use of the money while it is in the mail, and until the check is cashed and returned to them. If the check is NEVER cashed, they put the money back in your account after a year has passed.

I fear BOH has the same practice (anyone know?), so I haven't gotten mad enough to move.

In an on-line account I have with a California bank, the money stays in my account until the payee cashes it (or deposits it) and the check gets back to my bank. just like a regular paper check.

Hank
