I graduated from Messiah College in nearby Grantham. It is a great college but only offers undergraduate programs at this time. Penn State is another option. Harrisburg is the capital but not even close to the size of Boston. Many of the surrounding towns look very rural. The city is about halfway between Philadelphia on the East and Pittsburgh on the West.

My grandmother grew up in Harrisburg and she always told me about how single-minded people were there. She was an artist and dancer (you could call her a bohemian) and people there were so right-winged and conservative that they basically just cast her out. I made a trip to Harrisburg and it seemed just like a smal college town. Outside of downtown seemed pretty ****ty though. But im not exactly sure. I dont think you would find what your looking for though. Its kind of a stale town. Not really a big city.

Not a stale town at all, especially compared to other places in PA. Lots of new migration and development..unfortunately mostly suburban but the downtown/midtown section has seen quite a bit of new construction as well.

BTW, midtown Harrisburg has a bustling arts scene...new bookstores have opened up recently, there's an independent cinema, and it was just announced a few months ago that a group of investors from NYC are going to turn an abandoned building into an arts center and film studio. There's also several galleries around (even in the suburbs now) and a great art museum (Susquehanna Art Museum) downtown.

Try more like 750K in the metro
