Hi! Our family is relocating to PA from CT later this year. My husband will be working in Middletown and we are looking for a commute that is 1/2 hour or less. Since we have 2 children (one of which is a preschooler with speech needs), we are really trying to find a community that is within the commute, offers good school and low crime. We are going to look on the West side (Camp Hill or Mechanicsburg) but it seems that crossing the river will definitely hurt the commute time.

So my question is - what areas East of Harrisburg would people recommend? We will look at Hershey but obviously there are only a limited # of houses in Hershey. Your input is appreciated!

Hummelstown always seemed like a nice community to me with a traditional downtown area. It is part of the Lower Dauphin School District

Hummelstown sits north of Middletown and east of Harrisburg.

IMO, middletown is a nice community.

Why not look there?

Visit Elizabethtown, just a little south of Middletown. Its a great small town. To find out a little more about E-town, use the search funtion on this page.

There are many relatively new homes between Middletown and Hershey;much closer to Hershey and Hummelstown but a close drive to Middletown. I would strongly recommend Hershey or its environs, as the area is very family-friendly.

I used to live off of Fulling Mill Road and Nissley Drive back in the Twelve Oaks subdivision. Go back there and you will find many nice homes. Its a Middletown address but out of the Borough. Very easy commute to town.

Thanks for the input! My husband was out there on business yesterday and today, so your replies gave him a few ideas of towns to check out. He seemed to really like Elizabethtown and Hershey. We'll do more looking when we head out on our house hunting trip in the fall but it gives me ideas of towns to stalk the real estate websites for! He and I have varied criteria on what we want in a house. He is set on having land and trees whereas I'm much more into wanting a community. So we'll have to see what happens.

Thanks again.
