Was originally from Carlisle and have lived in Big cities most my life. My partner is looking a relo opportunity to the Harrisburg area. Can anyone shed light on gay friendly neighborhoods in that area. We would go as far east as Lancaster for the right community. Must be family friendly as we are adopting. Appreciate all you impute....

Hey there!

I feel uniquely qualified to answer this one because
1. I am married to a woman (as a woman myself) and
2. I just moved to the region from the NYC metro area.

My wife and I chose to live in the West End of Lancaster city....and we LOVE it. Our neighbor to the left is a guy and his partner, and there is a significant gay community here. We expected that moving from the nyc metro area, that we would face *some* sort of crap...but to be honest, it's the most welcoming and accepting place we've lived. At the coffee shop about a block away (Chestnut Hill Cafe), you'll regularly see same-sex couples, younger gay folks, even trans folks from time to time. Even the church on the block has a pride flag flying out front...and I don't know of a church in our area that's not welcoming...if that's your thing. The pastor of the Unitarian church by the dog park is a gentleman who is also married to a man.

My spouse works in the Harrisburg area also, and though she commutes about 40 min, she will tell you in a heartbeat that it's worth it. We can walk to the dog park, the coffee shop, any restaurant in the downtown area (and there are a TON), as well as any of the art galleries. We bought a historic home on the West End that looks like an old victorian brownstone...

It's definitely a family friendly area - there is a children's science center you can walk to...parks, ice cream shops, a small town stadium for the local home team baseball games (where you can get great seats and hotdogs for cheap), and many of the city homes have small yards - so you get the small yard, and still have the city amenities you can walk to. My friends who have visited have compared it to a small city version of Brooklyn..with a bit more green space.

Anyway - if you have any questions, need a great realtor (ours was amazing), or just want an intro to the neighborhood - feel free to message me. I'd be happy to give you any info you'd think would be helpful.

Harrisburg has a strong gay community. Housing options in Midtown and Shipoke neighborhoods are safe and friendly.
