What do you think are the best places to be found in HRVA that are off the beaten path? They can be parks, restaurants, attractions, whatever.

For one, I'm going to have to say Back Bay Wildlife Refuge. Absolutely gorgeous with so many different ecosystems crammed into such a (relatively) small area.

I take 64 and 13 northbound, and 58, 17 and 168 southbound don't count?

I don't think anyone really goes off of the beaten path here. You don't really have to.

My favorite is The Highlander--traditional Scottish food. Their fish and chips are great and they have a good selection of imported beers. It's hidden in the typical Hampton Rds strip mail but it's worth going to. It can be somewhat pricey because the food is like homemade and really good but you can often find a Groupon for it.

My other favorite place is the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk. It has the best glass collection I've ever seen. I think they have a big Tiffany glass window on display, or they did when I was there. They give lessons in glassblowing, sand casting, and other things.

Stinehilbers
Zia Marie
Torch Bistro
Smartmouth Brewing Co. & other eateries around Lambert's point
The Cellars Restaurant
One Fish Two Fish
Chick's Oyster Bar (haven't been but liked by coworkers)
Cilantro Bangladeshi Bistro (Not off the beaten path, but owner and family staff are friendly and food is great)

Cape Henry Lighthouse
Thoroughgood House
Ferry Plantation House

We found most of these by exploring (driving) the area. I'm sure more can be found. Google maps is a great resource.

If anyone has suggestions for other categories please share!

Can't say it is off the beaten path or a "secret", but.... Commonwealth Brewery is great. Super fun and chill....

They're also creating a new brewery out of an old farmhouse that should be awesome once it starts.

I don't know -- there is tons of great beer around.

False Cape SP is my favorite place down there. FT. Monroe is very cool too (the fort and the nice beach).
