My husband just had gotten a job offer at the Shipyards in Portsmouth.
We used to live in Virginia for a short time but moved. Now we're currently getting ready to go back. We are only familiar with the VA Beach area but to avoid any tunnels or bridges we want to live in either Portsmouth, Chesapeake, or Suffolk.
I'm not familiar with those areas at all.
I hear Churchland, Olde Towne, Deep Creek, Western Branch, Greenbrier, Great Bridge, and Harborview are some good areas. Am I right? Are there any areas at all that need to be added or taken off the list?

We want to rent an apartment in a good area but don't want to pay an arm and a leg for something either.
We're an interracial couple and we definitely don't mind diversity, we also want to live somewhere safe and though we've lived in Hampton Roads before, we are unfamiliar with those three cities.

Any one can help?
Any apartments recomened?
We'd prefer something in the $900 per month range or lower.
We are also considering renting a home for less than $1100 a month.
Thank you

Greenbrier, Great Bridge, and Harborview either are fine. People who work at the yard live as far south as Elizabeth City, N.Carolina

Thanks. We're not willing to commute that far into NC though. But we are considering Chesapeake areas.

I've looked up apartments in Churchland and they all seem pretty bad, but that would be a place to consider for renting a home.

Wow, I would have thought there'd be more answers than this and answers more detailed than one or two little sentences but I appreciate the advice.
Does anyone have actual detailed answers?

I go to the shipyard quite often and for the commute to the shipyard, I would recommend the three I've listed. Not many on this board work or go to the shipyard. I live in VB and I don't find any discomfort in the commute. You just have to leave early enough to miss the tunnel traffic.

The Riverfront at Harbour View is nice, but as for the original Harbour View neighborhood, it's nothing more than withering vinyl boxes. People are letting their yards get overgrown, their landscaping is garbage and it looks more and more like those awful VA Beach subdivisions every day.

The Riverfront still maintains itself well and is a peaceful place to live.

The condos at Waters Edge (at the Riverfront) are very affordable, you might want to have a look at them.

greenbrier is a busy area, lots of apartment complexes. when we first moved here, we lived in the empirian chesapeake which is right behind greenbrier mall. new complex, but it was $1200/mo for a 2 bdrm, more than your stated budget. there is a complex next to that (cant remember the name, but older and cheaper). we then bought a house in hickory but there arent a lot of rentals here. great bridge is a nice area and you can find some apartment complexes, i have no idea of the average rental amount. greenbrier has more shopping, then great bridge. hickory is somewhat rural. if you have more specific questions, ask. i am sure you will get answers.

If you are still looking for a place in that price range close to the NNSY and right outside the Naval Medical Center check out The Myrtles at Olde Towne and maybe some places in Historic Park View Neighborhood right next door. Dining close by with a short walk through Olde Towne and transportation runs through the area to take you to Walmart in 10 minutes.

Waterview, Sterling Point and Lynn Shores are three of Portsmouth's very best neighborhoods.
