I have never had a Chicago hot dog can you buy the stuff to make your own?
Never heard of neon green or celery salt...
Around here you can't get everything you need, but you can get most of the stuff. The ONLY place I have found Vienna Beef franks was at the Fresh Market and the price was ridiculous. It was almost $7.00 for eight franks. Onions, French's mustard, kosher pickle spears, and tomatoes are, of course, easy to find. Poppy seed buns are almost impossible. Sport peppers, which are pickled serranos, and the neon green relish will be the hardest to get. I have never seen celery salt here. Now I have made myself hungry.
I have seen Celery Salt here several times. Have you tried Whole Foods? I don't recall where I have seen it, but it is definitely available somewhere.
Thanks. I will check with Whole Foods and see if they have it. I was down Main near Sticky Fingers and didn't see the new cart that is supposedly opening. Has anybody spotted it yet? I wasn't around this weekend so I was afraid I missed him.
...um, that's less than a buck a dog....wouldn't this be cheaper than buying one at a hot dog cart?
It is not really cheaper because then you have to buy all the other raw materials like we discussed above. For me it doesn't really matter because I found the new guy set up right by Nuvox where Sticky Fingers is. I inspected his setup and ok and behold he has all the essetial ingredients direct from Chicago. I just had my first genuine Chicago dog in over four years and I couldn't be happier.

hmmm... maybe I should setup a NY hot dog stand, sell Zwiegles and Nathans, any takers? just kidding really, but glad you found what you were looking for!

While we're at it let's sell Schickhaus and Thurman's franks. I want to deep fry them like they do at Rutt's Hut in Clifton, NJ.
The other two guys downtown both sell Nathan's. The Sabrett's guy, surprisingly, sells Sabrett's when he's there. I have a place to get my fix although given the success rates of the hot dog guys downtown it may not last too long.
Darn! I was just downtown Monday but not far enough north on Main Street to catch the new hot dog stand. So glad you finally got your Chicago dog, Artista. Next chance I get, I'm there.
