To follow up a bit.. I searched some of the Greenville News archives, and in 1973 there was a lawsuit against Mark Steingard, who owned the Jerry Lewis Cinemas, and the franchisor.. Over showing X rated movies (One of which was A Clockwork Orange).. The franchisor successfully won an injunction preventing them from showing any further X rated features.

So.. Some of these showings were while they were still branded under the "Jerry Lewis" name, and.. Unlike what we have in mind today.. "X Rated" was more common back in the 60's and 70's and didn't necessarily mean porn. Though.. Many did wind up showing Porn.

Apparently, also.. SC had a law requiring a 25% additional tax on movies with an "X" rating. There were a few complaints from people in the paper asking how the theater could justify charging a whole THREE Dollars for a movie. Ah.. 1970's problems..

Old movie theaters are something of a fascination of mine. I love that cinematreasures.org site.. Just looking through it the other day in relation to all this.. I found that the building that was recently demolished on Legrand blvd that housed The Castle was apparently originally a theater.. "The Flick"

I remember skipping school at Wade Hampton in the 90s to go to the Bijou Theater. Are you talking about The Castle night club off Pleasantburg?

Yeah, it apparently opened as an art house style small theater back in the 50's.. Then became a porn theater (seems to be a common refrain.. But it's better than what happened to the Echo in Laurens) and sometime after that became the LGBT "Castle" club..

Speaking of The Echo, have you heard anything recently concerning the remodel? Last I heard, a church had bought the building with intent to remodel for various usages.

We ate at the new Husk in Greenville last weekend while there for Clemson graduation. What used to be in that building? It looks historical.

I've got to try to swing by there.. The last I saw a couple of years ago, nothing at all had happened with it, other than they had taken down the lettering and "imagery" on the marquee.

John Howard, I believe was his name, was booted from the building in 2012 and passed away last September.

That theater is just so back in a corner, you can't see it from the main road there, and I never have reason to duck down where it is.

I knew that low life through an acquaintance that owned a welding shop near where he lived, but I wont go into that. I think it was earlier this year, or late last year when the church purchased the building, so they may have not dont anything with it yet. Like you, I dont go to that area of town much, and was curious if you had heard anything.
