Well looks like the previous news Southwest employees were telling me over the Summer about bringing more flights back in 2014 after the cuts turned out to be more hopeful optimism than actual truth. Word from them now is the Nashville route is gone in June leaving them with just 4 daily flights. 2 to MDW and 1 each to HOU and BWI. They'll be dropping a gate as well. Been told their loads out of GSP have been running at 67% which is 8th worst in their system and right now they are bleeding money. Next step maybe outsourcing their workers to try to cut costs, but right now things aren't looking good for the low cost carrier in the upstate!
Tis a bummer for sure. All that initial hype and traffic dying down as usual. We have a lot of flights from our company to NY, Boston and Detroit. Every flight I've taken for work has not been on SW for sure.
It's not just GSP. I read the other day that they have dropped several small cities altogether and they are finding they are making money only in large markets. One reason they gave for not choosing Columbia was that they felt they couldn't make money at CAE.
I know the low fares they had upon entering the market are a thing of the past, which didn't help matters. I used to fly that Houston route occasionally for work but it wasn't cost effective much past their first year at GSP, costs were usually the same or a little less on Delta, albeit not direct. Connections grew worse too once they dropped some of the initial flights, just flew them to Newark the other day and had to connect through Chicago. Made for a nightmarish trip home on Monday what with the snow in Chicago.
I miss Independence Air.. I actually flew for work one day to IAD at 9:30am and was able to finish that day and booked a return flight back to GSP at 9pm or so, tickets bought the same day(The 9:30am flight tickets were bought at 8:30am or so), and I think it was under $200 total.
I had to go through just short of a colonoscopy at security on both sides because of the same-day/one-way tickets, but..

My parents had a similar trip last year. From Tampa to here via Houston. More that 10 hours from door to door, the same as driving.

Sounds familiar. We got to the Newark airport at 12:30 PM. Arrived here at 12:45 AM. 3 hour plus delayed flight in Chicago. That's what I get for wanting to use my miles.
Pittsburgh Intl. Airport invested a lot of (taxpayer) money at their airport for US Air. After a short while, US Air left them high and dry. Could the same thing be happening at GSP? I surely hope not.
Greenville News has confirmed the bad news. Nashville is being cut June 8th.
I'm bummed. My family that moved me here six years ago moved near Nashville earlier this year. I am not in good enough shape to make the drive and was planning to fly to Nashville via SW.
