Folks, I am from up north and there is a distinct possibility that I may get a job in Winston-Salem and would like to know what the place is like? What are the PROS and CONS? Can you actually live in Greensboro and commute to work in Winston-Salem? What are some of the really safe and/or upscale neighborhoods there, and what advice and recommendations do you have for me? Is it a great place for both 6 & 3 year old girls to grow up and attend school? In addition, how do minorities fare there? The job maybe near or around an area called the Robinhood Road Financial Center. Is that a good part of town and are there any good and safe neighborhoods within an half hour's drive from there? Thanks for your help.

The Robinhood,Sherwood Forest area of WS is older but generally mid to upper class. The schools are great in that area as they are pretty decent throughout WS/Clemmons. Clemmons from the RFC area is about 15 minutes and it is one of the best neighborhoods in Forsyth County. You could live in GSO and easily (45 mins) commute to WS, but IMHO WS is better for young families than GSO.
Pros: Great place to raise family; pretty much of everything is within 30 minutes; family friendly downtown events such as Summer on Trade; Live After 5 etc...during the spring and summer; River Run Int'l film festival; great weather; modest home prices; mountains, beaches and big cities(Charlotte/Raleigh) are close by
Cons: limited nightlife (bars/clubs); limited mid range, non chain resturants, very limited public transportation.
Crowded??? That's about the last word I'd use to describe Winston-Salem. What on earth are you talking about?
It was when I was last there but that was a while back.
