From what I understand the South Elm Street project is moving forward. The President of DGI emailed me and said its in the works. Its a pretty big project and its going to take a little time to get it together. It took 10 years from concept to construction for Southside.

The mayor loved my ideas and he is passing the concepts over to local architect Ken Mayer and former city manager Ed Kitchen who are both involved with the University District plan.

This is a rendering of the South Elm/Lee Street development which includes a hotel, retail, restaurants, an international market, civic space and the educational building which will likely be the first phase of the downtown university district. Its the brown building on the right. The hotel is the 6 story light yellow building in the back. The residential, retail and international market is the building on the left. The little building in the courtyard will be used as civic space for events. The university district will be more than just sprawling educational campuses through out downtown. Ultimately the university district will help attract companies downtown as they engage in collaboration with the downtown campus. The University District could end up looking more like a mix of urban villages as oppose to looking like a college campus.

The downtown university center could open by 2015. The 100,000 plus sq ft building is just the beginning of what will eventually become a university district.

Considering they haven't even gotten to the property acquisition phase a 2015 open date's a little bit optimistic. It sounds like a really good idea and lord knows Greensboro needs something to jumpstart growth, but I think they're getting a little ahead of themselves in that article.

Unless a site has already been chosen and has not been fully disclosed to the public. My guess is that its going in the South Elm/Lee Street project. construction on that will begin in 2013. In some local circles, I heard thats where its going. This will be great for Greensboro and its unique.

There is ZERO value added in this concept, at least as far as I can detect from the presented material. It's nothing more than a lot of land/city development empty conjecturing, a feature of society since its beginnings. The Spokane example, offered as a model and supposed proof of viability, does not bare resemblance to this proposal, other than there being institutes of higher education involved. In Spokane, two state universities, one a half hour's drive and the other a one and a half hour's drive from Spokane each placed satellite facilities in Spokane, it being the largest city in that part of Washington and also without any state university in the city (other than community colleges). They situated them directly across the Spokane River from Gonzaga University (a private school). Most of the offerings are from Washington State, the school located the farthest from Spokane in Pullman, Wa. Eastern Washington University, out of Cheney, Wa., offers chiefly a school of business and public administration (very oriented towards existing college grads pursuing a masters), and a logical reason for their being in Spokane. The two 'out of town' universities then share a library for their Spokane campus.
There is no such logic, efficiency or value added in the concept proposed for the Greensboro project, which possibly explains no serious financial support for it.

Its official, The South Elm/Lee Street site is chose for the downtown joint university campus.

"Organizers see the campus as an anchor for further development south of Lee Street. Another 6 acres of vacant land adjoins the proposed campus to the south and west. The South Elm Development Group — hired by the city to transform the site has big plans for it.
Bob Chapman, one of the group’s principals, said that once the campus is open, the group will build a 93,000-square-foot office and shopping building, a 150-room hotel and conference center, two apartment buildings with 156 units, and two parking decks."
