We have come to see ourselves as the center of the Universe. Every thing we do, is to benefit ourselves, or our families. --As for myself, I'm just fine. but I have concerns for the world we are leaving for Our Children. Lessons we don't learn, will simply be passed down to them. we can do better. we should do better. --But to be honest, we have no role model. Our country is that new.

To think independently could cause one to be ostracized from the herd.

It's true; individualism is king around here. That's why New Balance has a few hundred different models of shoes. You'd die of embarrassment if you saw your neighbor walking around with the same ones you've got on!
I rarely see individualism. In one of my sociology classes they kept talking about how everything is about individualism. I was like wow this teacher is an idiot and my foolish classmates sat there and nodded along to everything the blimp had to say. She doesn't get out much. Too busy eating twinkies and donuts and grading papers in her spare time.
A lot of people think they are individuals because they shop at Hot Topic or Old Navy. Ughhh.

Herd mentality can be a blessing in disguise.
Whenever I tell someone I just returned from one of my chicken-bus, pick-up riding trips through Central America to remote villages, any member of the herd is quick to say: You do mean Costa Rica, don't you?
On all my trips to South America, I rarely, if ever encountered members of the herd down there, outside of the herd destinations of Macchu Picchu or Iguazu Falls. Saying they were to Cochabamba, Bolivia or Cajamarca, Peru would raise eyebrows at a cocktail party gathering. It might end up being your last invitation.
All the places I desire to travel to, the herd hasn't discovered them yet, or better yet, haven't destroyed them yet. Such a blessing, traveling to places where you never need a hotel reservation.
In December I'm off on an experimental trip, using Greyhound buses, for a change, between cities. After that trip, I'll have to hone up on my lying skills. The herd will never believe me. Ok, ok! I flew or rented a car!
