Imagine you are a Jew in Europe in 1935 and you are positive about the events that are going to take place within a few years. Since this is just an exercise in imagination, imagine you have a time machine that can transport one modern day firearm with 10,000 rounds of ammunition from 2009 back to 1935. What would be your choice of firearm? Why?

What tactics would you employ to protect your family knowing that you will not be able to leave Europe?

Rule #1 you cannot transport a phaser from Captain Kirk's Enterprise from the 23rd century. Just modern firearms available in 2009 with the 10,000 round limit.

Does your definition of 'firearm' mean that it has to be able to be held and controlled by means of a single person?

I'd rather not.

"imagine you have a time machine that can transport one modern day firearm with 10,000 rounds of ammunition from 2009 back to 1935. What would be your choice of firearm?"

Why would I need to transport a contemporary weapon when there were plenty of fine weapons at the time? Personally I would prefer something of a local nature, for reasons of ammunition availability (I'll address your ammunition issue in a second) so I would be perfectly happy with the Walther P-38, and a MP-40, the later being sufficient firepower in a concealable weapon.

Which brings me to your 10,000 rounds... that's a lot of ammo to be tied down two. If you are depending on a cache of 10,000 rounds it means that you have a place that you will either have to stay close to, or return to on too regular a basis. That doesn't seem very smart from a security stand point. I think that replenishment by theft and capture seems to be a better strategy.

Of course all of this is utterly meaningless if you have any intention is to stand and fight. My main strategy would have been to get the hell out of dodge and failing that, emulating the Bielskis Partisans.

Bigger guns only lead to the other guy getting one even bigger. A couple unnamed countries did this in the 80's - they went trillions into debt to amass several times more than they could ever use. Now there's way more than anyone can use - *ever* - and they are spending money to disarm...

Just something to think about.

The only thing that could have saved the Jews is if they all had access to guns & were wlling to use them. One man with a gun aint worth much, a few hundred, thousand or tens of thousands is different. That is why our second amendment is so important. Its only meaningful if everybody has access to arms. Its important to note that befre Hitler started killing Jews he banned firearms.

Talking Cheerful and Happy and Well-Armed

Steve Martin is my hero in this one - a .22. If you use a large caliber, there is a mess. With a .22, the bullet goes inside, bounces around, and tears up organs and tissue like nobody's business - and often doesn't come out until the autopsy. To quote Steve - "there's less dry cleaning involved". And it's true - I worked EMS and have seen people shot with shotguns, .45's, .38's, and survive; even though they are hurt, they can recover, unless you are right on top of them or really accurate. (I've spent three hours picking shotgun pellets out of a woman's scalp - while we chatted.) .22's - not so much. There's minimal kick so if you are a fair shot you can place a quick pattern with a semi-auto. There's less noise so you don't alert the neighbors (or the victim). The spray-type guns are really not that accurate, especially if you are in an emotionally-excited state - and one person with a machine gun or automatic weapon can be taken out. Several accurate people -at several points of access and able to move around under cover - with .22's are like a swarm of deadly bees. For close-up emergencies I like my .38 with hollow-points, but to make folks keep their distance, I like my .22 LRs. Plus you can take down small game with them, with just a little 'pop' that is unobtrusive. If the SHTF, I'm not bugging out; this is my 'last stand', so being highly mobile is not a consideration. It's easier to hide the bodies without a lot of backsplash on the sidewalk or the porch. And the ammo is cheap.

There were actually some Jews who did try to keep their guns and ammo and who did make some 'last stands', unfortunately, not enough to matter. By the time the Jewish folk realized that their 'relocation' was not something to be suffered through until they were released again, it was too late.

The old story about how to trap wild pigs is applicable. The first week you put out corn. The second week you put up a fence on the north side, with more corn. The third week a fence on the south side, with more corn. The fourth week a fence on the west side, with more corn. By the time you put up the fence on the east side, the pigs are yours, to slaughter as you please. Being a suicidal martyr doesn't thrill me too much, but neither does pigging out on the free corn, pretending everything is normal, waiting for the last fence to go up, or the axe to fall.
