With the relatively recent "save the planet" and "green" initiatives, I'm wondering if most people feel that we can actually save the planet?

Do people generally think that Earth was made to last forever? Even if we stopped all pollution and harmful acts right now, would it be enough?

I suppose if you take the statement literally, which would be rather foolish, then no man cannot save the planet. If the statement is concerned with saving the planet from human degradation then yes it is in the interest of humans to do so.

The Earth....was it made to last forever?

Matter can neither be created nor destroyed, it can be altered.

But then it talks in a high squeaky voice...

Actually, E=MC2, which means matter can be converted into energy, which is why the atom bomb worked. But then, if you follow string theory, there is a likelihood that matter is merely a lazy form of energy anyway.

It is a given that as the sun ages, the earth will get hotter, to the point that it will become uninhabitable. The scale of that is much longer than our lifespans. For a while, Mars might be a viable planet. Whatever.

The sun is going to die here in several billion years. It will expand and eventually envelop the earth. Hence, the earth is not going to last forever.

Nobody can 'really' save this or any other planet. But it would be an excellent change of advocacy to treat Her and ourselves with a much greater sense of respect. I suppose the sun will envelope the Earth first. Or we'll just blow ourselves to smithereens.

To answer the question though... nothing, in my experience, is made to last forever. Although I did find out today that a cockroach can live up to NINE days after it's head has been removed. Creepy.

Seeing as how some day the sun is scientifically forecasted to balloon in size and basically turn this planet into a fiery cinder block, it's obviously safe to say that the Earth was not "made to last forever".

Which is kind of a shame. There's some pretty neat places.
