I want to check out Helen especially for the river tubing. I'm trying to avoid a big crowd, so my intent is to visit on a Thursday and Friday. I've scoped traffic data on Google Maps to gauge how busy the roads are, and it seems Main St. traffic starts getting heavier at 12:00PM. It appears to be busier on Friday.

Has anyone been to Helen the past few weeks during a Thursday or Friday? I'm also interested to know if there were a lot of people floating on the river around noon or early afternoon timeframe. Thanks!

I quit Shootin the Hooch when I was 50 years old and our daughter got older. Now, I find myself at 70 with 9 and 12 year old grandchildren, and I'm still having to Shoot the Hooch with them again.

During the week, Helen is pretty quiet. But on weekends, the city is so congested that the Tubing buses cannot get back and forth through town.

2 weeks ago on Saturday, the line go get on the bus was 200+ yards long. We just hit the streets and walked the 2 1/4 miles back to our car.

Thursdays are busy, but Friday and Saturdays are just too much--over the top. (We keep a RV there.)

Thanks! We only got as far as Dahlonega and decided to turn around. We were staying in Blue Ridge. Next time, we'll stay a little closer to Helen and check it out.

Your info is definitely useful, so I will try to book between Monday and Wednesday to avoid the big crowds.

Check out tubing or kayaking the Toccoa River from Blue Ridge to McCaysville. There's a kayak rental at the Lake Blue Ridge dam and some tubing rentals near McCaysville. Toccoa is a beautiful river.

You're only on the Toccoa for less than a mile in McCaysville, before it becomes the Ocoee. Going west on the Ocoee the rapids are fantastic. It's where the Olympic kayak races were held. It's far better than the Hooch and cleaner too.
