Hi-
We are relocating for my husband's new job in Rome. I have two children in elementary school and was wondering about the schools in Rome. It looks like Armuchee or Pepperell are rated fairly well. Would this be accurate? We were also looking at some areas in Cartersville. It looked like about a 50 minute commute, but more newer subdivisions, comparable to better schools, and lower property taxes. Which schools would you go with? Is this commute done by anyone? Is the traffic terrible?

Any help would be appreciated!

I never hear about Rome much. Kind of forget it is there. Cartersville will probably be more modern just b/c it is not so far off the interstate and closer to Atlanta. 50 minute commute would get old for me though, real quick.

Armuchee is a good cluster of schools that is close to your husband's job in Rome and is probably the area that you should first look before looking in Bartow County and having your husband commit to a 40-50 minute commute between the Cartersville and the Rome areas.

Rome City Schools are better than Floyd County Schools. Bartow County is better than both of them. I can't speak for Cartersville City Schools, but my in gut would be that they are better than both Rome and Floyd as well. But Bartow County is most definitely the better. You may also want to consider Calhoun and Gordon County (north of Cartersville, due east of Rome on I-75). It's a nice community about halfway between Chattanooga and Atlanta.

The commute from either Cartersville of Calhoun to Rome should not be more than 30 minutes.

Unless you just want to live closer to Metro Atlanta, Rome is a perfectly fine little city with all the amenities of a much bigger town. Decent shopping mall, lively historic downtown, many scenic neighborhoods, a symphony orchestra, three colleges and a minor league baseball team -- the Rome Braves!

Berry College or University in Rome is supposedly the largest college campus in the world with 27000 acres. There are only 2000 undergrad students, so it is many acres per student. LOL

My brother applied and was accepted there. He never visited it though, it was weird he applied there.

I think Rome looks like a decent town but I cannot think of one major employer there. I don't ever see any jobs up there on job boards.

Where are you coming from? If you've never been to that part of NW Georgia, it's very charming.

The area in Cartersville you choose and the area in Rome you work will define how long the commute will be. If you live in the North Cartersville area and work in the East Rome area, your commute will be less than 30 minutes. If you live all the way in the downtown or west Cartersville area and commute to the West Rome area you are looking at about 50 minutes.

I agree about the housing, there are a lot of newer subdivisions in Cartersville. I don't go to Rome often but it seems to be agreat divide amongst the rich and poor, with few falling in as middle class. Cartersville City Schools are pretty good and Bartow County Schools has it's good schools along with bad.

A lot of people who live in Cartersville commute to Fulton, Cobb, and even Rome. The people that I know commuting to Rome don't have a problem with it. All the traffic is going towards Cobb/Fulton, not Rome.
