I'm a twenty-two year-old community college student and I've decided to drop out of school and move away for a year or two. It's a gutsy move considering today's economy and the fact that I'll have to start paying off loans in six months. At this point I'm going in blind because I don't have the means to visit a bunch of places. I'm trusting you for valid and legitimate suggestions based on my needs. Here's my list:
I don't want to feel overwhelmed by the big city or bored by the small town. Something mid-size would be nice because then I still have options and opportunities.
I liked Wyoming, North Carolina, and Colorado when I visited. However, these states are not required.
I like the woods and the ability to go hiking.
I want to get away from harsh, cold winters.
I want a place with great performing arts.
I currently have about $1200 to my name so low living costs are important.
I need a young community that really strives for the future.
I don't care for religion
I'm concerned about the environment and I'm interested in sustainability.
I like to "smoke", so access to decent herbs is important.
I'm an artistic, alternative, bisexual, nature-loving, musical, caring individual and I need a place where I'll fit in.
I have work experience in box office ticket sales for a live theater and some food prep/cook experience.
I want fresh air and water.
I'm tired of the commercial, artificial world and I'm looking for the real, down to earth world.
Good music is important but not as much as good live theater.
I'm single and I have a small black dog.
Green, holistic, spiritual, whole-food living is important to me.
Thanks in advance for suggesting a city/town/area. Let me know if you'd like to know more from me.

You sound like California to me. Lots of midwesterners that dont fit in back home "find themselves" in California. Im sure youll like it better there, im sure with how you described yourself Michigan or anywhere near it is not for you.

However ....

Think of CA as an up and coming Rust Belt state, but one that is much more expensive. So, it's a double whammy of high costs and a terrible economic environment. Much worse than most other states. We're in the bottom 6 or 7 by most measures.
