Which region of the US, out of the ones listed, is the most rural?

In what terms? The MOST small towns? The highest proportion of people living in small towns? The highest proportion of people living more than 3 hours from a decent size city?

As for the top 20 states with the highest rural % from the 2000 census:

West: 4 states
Northeast: 4 states
Midweset: 4 states
South: 8 states

For the highest gross number of people living in rural areas, top 20 states:

West: 1 state
Northeast: 1 state
Midwest: 7 states
South: 11 states

South: 26.9%
Midwest: 25.3%
Northeast: 16.7%
West: 11.4%

Rural gross population, 2000:

South: 26,098,000
Midwest: 16,288,000
Northeast: 9,500,000
West: 7,176,000

Yes, and I imagine Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York would also appear on that list.

The West.. Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Utah are some of the most emptiest states we have in the lower 48... I think extremely Rural comes into play when we talk about the west.

Though Iowa, Kansas and the Dakotas make the Midwest look pretty empty and rural too.

West and Midwest are both rural, though voted for the west.

Yeah I had to go with the West as well. The South has some very rural areas as well though. Close call between those two regions in my guess.
