I wanted to comment on how surprised I was to read about the crime in Costa Rica. I know that a lot of people are looking at Costa Rica and Panama to retire because of the lower cost of living. My nephews travelled to Belize in hopes of opening up medical practices there, but they found out that it's nothing like they heard it USED to be ~ now it has a lot of crime and is considerably more expensive than they expected. I assume the same is happening to the Central American countries, too.
Sad but true...crime is going from bad to worse here in Costa Rica. Although I've lived here the last 8 years, I've been coming here my whole life as I'm 1/2 Costa Rican and have family here. I've been surprised at how quickly the change has come. It's been a great experience for my kids as they are now fluent in Spanish and got to spend 5 years with their great-grandmother. But the stress of insane traffic and crime around every corner has gotten to me. Crime in the States is not the same as here. I lived in NYC before Giuliani cleaned it up - and this is much worse!
