So I think my favorite place that I've visited that I would love to live would be black mountain NC.

It has the perfect climate, perfect geography, perfect natural environment, everything I'm looking for.

The catch, is that the town is EXTREMELY liberal appearing from visiting. They were still actively trying to enforce mask mandates over a year into covid, etc... like that's not the environment I want to escape NY state from and move to. If black mountain was middle of the road or right leaning politically it would be perfect for me but it's not.

I'm fine with north Carolinas state level politics being a red/purple lean. I know NC isn't as red as TN or SC and that's fine. I'm content with "right leaning" or common sense. I despise the woke mentality and movement and will not be a part of that. In honesty I'm very live and let live but the progressives won't return the favor and just leave me Alone to do as I please.

Are there "similar" small towns that are comparable or feel like black mountain NC that tend to be more middle of the road? I'm willing to consider locations in upstate SC, north GA, Western NC, maybe the panhandle of VA, WV, KY, TN and maybe far north AL near Huntsville. Looking for a mild/moderate climate near woods/hills/mountains, near elevation for more.moderate summer heat and humidity.

Don't suggest towns that if alligators can survive there I'm not interested. That's my rule. That means I'm too far south. I'm trying to avoid fire ants (as best as I can hope), cottonmouths (as best as I can hope), alligators etc. It seems as long as I'm off the coastal plain and up on some.elevatuon I don't have to worry about lost of.that.

Anyone have any suggestions for places to research?

You want a southern political climate but you'd like a milder climate? I'd say most places in the midwest. Maybe Dallas? No gators there.

Outside of Asheville, I think NC is purple to deep red.

I'd say the Boone/Blowing Rock era is your best bet. Black Mountain is too close to Asheville to feel its influence, and thus the liberal lean there. Even the Hickory/Lenoir/Hudson, NC area if you're looking for something a little bigger and flatter; one of my uncles lives there and its fairly moderate to right-leaning.

No, I think you misunderstood me. On the political spectrum I'm fine any from deep red conservative to middle off the road.

Ok not interested in anything to the left of center

Thanks maybe I'll look into this area more. I think perhaps farther from Asheville influence is a good thing and what I'm looking for. Haven't checked into west Jefferson much but seems interesting

Thanks I will look into it. I think there's some truth to black mountain getting a lot of overflow from Asheville. Good perspective thanks.

To answer the question,

Look into Elkins, WV! Beautiful mountain town surrounded by mountains and recreation. I'm from WV, but I did the reverse that you're wanting to do. I moved to NY. Trust me, it was NOT for the politics in NY. Elkins is trendy, but not over the top liberal. The climate is probably very similar to Black Mountain, but you may get a little bit more snow there. The only benefit that Black Mountain would have over Elkins is its proximity to a much larger town in Asheville.
