The argument that you should learn to deal with X (crime, pollution, etc.) because "that's what you sign up for when you choose to live in a city" has never sat right with me, because my impression is that most people don't have all that much choice in where they live.
I'm making this poll, in part, to see how true that is (but also, any anecdotes or stories you want to share about your residential history are very much appreciated).
I live where I live because I'm a contract worker who gets moved across the country every year or so for projects. So I had a choice to get into this lifestyle, but not about specifically what city I would go to.
I live here because of family. When my wife and I married, we chose to remain close to her parents and to mine even though I was offered a job out of state. We've moved a couple of times locally for better schools but have remained in the same area - within 20 miles or so of where we grew up.
I'd love to move inland, away from hurricanes and humidity, but that location will also likely depend on our proximity to grandchildren.

I grew up here in Midland, Texas and have never gotten around to moving yet. However, I really want to.
I'm an other. I grew up here. Left for a while, got a few degrees, experienced new things, married, had a few kids. Came back because 1. We like it here and 2. We wanted our children to grow up around family.
You need quite a few more choices, one being I hated where I lived or I wanted to try something different.
Kinda falls in line with #6.
We made the calculated choice that fits our lifestyle because we didn’t like where we were and wanted to try something different.
We live where we live because we feel like it, basically.
I have been where I am for 47 years total and it used to be a nice area in the old days 40-50 years ago but it’s been ruined by the developers and all of their subdivision and strip mall construction.
I won’t be staying here when I retire.
