Surprise! The states with the youngest marriage age are not in the South, they're in the West--Utah, Idaho, Wyoming.
I am surprised that the average marriage age in California is as high as it is. I grew up in California, and many of my friends (all 24 and younger) are already married--even the guys.
I'm 25 and almost none of my friends are married, but one, I live in Seattle, and two, my social circles are full of software developers, grad students, and other nerdy types. My parents wanted to finish grad school and get established in their fields before starting a family, so they got married at 32.
Marriage is good for individuals and good for society. I have noticed that even here in red state Tennessee that many young people no longer care about marriage. The damage done to our society by children being born out of wedlock, fatherless families and the complicated world of baby mamas and baby daddies is profound. The traditional family is the glue that holds our society together.
We were better off as a society when people married young and stayed married.

Watch out for cause-and-effect fallacy. Did societal change influence marriage customs, or the other way around? Or neither -- Coincidence does not necessarily imply causation.
Some people marry young because they don't want to be alone. Or because everyone else is doing it.
I'm a black girl from Tn and a lot of people in my hometown were married young. There is a huge military base there so I believe this is a factor. It seems anyone in a military family (can apply to any military town) or fortunate to have a solid six-figure job are getting married. Everyone else is out of luck.
My friend who is a Navy wife has told me about the benefits their family gets. She's almost 25 with 2 small ones. Apparently military members get housing loans and other forms of generous assistance not offered to civilians. I think this is a huge incentive for young people to hitch. And I'm pretty sure if it was like that for any other field of work they'd just as easily flock to it.
I simply am not interested in it. If I ever change my mind I won't date a guy making less than me and his income has ro be enough for a family wherever we are.
Utah also has a lot of Mormons so it's a huge factor.
