West Virginia!
I love WV. The people can be great, the terrain is awesome, the weather is my style. It takes what I love about the south and the northeast and mashes it together into one unique stew.
As far as what city I could go for a bunch of them. Wheeling, Morgantown, Elkins (My personal favorite), Huntington, Charleston. But one of my favorite non-city places is this little burg in the northeast corner called Albright.
Ideally I'd like to live near Elkins. Not in it but near it. Near enough to get what I need and far enough to be somewhat isolated.
Virginia- I actually lived in NOVA for a short period of time/was born in DC. I could definitely see myself living in old town Alexandria or somewhere near the yellow/orange line so I could have quick access into the city without having to deal with traffic.
Georgia- I really like Atlanta, it's booming and will only continue to grow.
Tennessee- I could live in Nashville and Chattanooga really appeals to me
North Carolina- I could live in Charlottesville, and I think NC has some really pretty beaches.
South Carolina- A state that only JUST took down the confederate flag from their State House? No thanks
West Virginia- Too many "hicks" and too rural/slow paced.
Alabama- Nope
Kentucky- Very pretty state, but the state as a whole doesn't really appeal to me.
My choice to live in would be South Georgia or South Alabama, everything else is too far north.
Texas, Louisiana, Hawaii, and Florida cover territory extending further south than those two areas you mentioned. Unless, of course, you are speaking culture-wise.
After experiencing Mississippi and Alabama when I was in the Air Force. Atlanta and Georgia when I worked for Delta Airlines. Now that I'm retired and experiencing Central Florida. I have decided I am not cut out for the Southeast, especially the state of Florida. Visiting is one thing but never to live in. Though I never would want to visit Fla again once I leave.
If I absolutely had to choose and could afford it, and tolerate the crowds and traffic. Then I guess it would be Northern Virginia.

No, I was just using the choices given.
"If you could live in either tennessee, kentucky, west virginia, virginia,
north carolina, south carolina, georgia, or alabama."
7) Alabama: Could definitely enjoy Birmingham and maybe even Mobile but I'll pass on the rest of the state. Economically and culturally dead outside of those two cities (ok except for Huntsville economically, but that place is pretty damn ugly)
Why do you think Huntsville is ugly? It's in a beautiful natural setting.
I would likely choose the Western North Carolina/Upstate South Carolina area out of the original poster's list of choices. I like the scenery and the climate.
