I find it amazing at what people say they have "heard" about Alabama. It is nothing like t.v. and hear say plays it out to be. Oh and not ALL men in Alabama are scuzzy, chew tobacco and spit.
TN winter is almost just about a Michigan spring.
I wouldnt choose any place in the South East, its becoming less valuable or favorable.
With predictions of Global Warming that I heard, stronger hurricanes could be more likely to hit the southeast including the Gulf of Mexico "I think."
1. Virginia, but not the metro DC area. Charlottesville area, maybe.
2. Kentucky. Louisville is a nice and inviting, if kinda sleepy, mid-sized city.
3. Tennessee. I remember Nashville as one of the friendlier and cleaner cities I've visited.
4. West Virginia. Cheaper living, but stay around the Morgantown or Wheeling areas.
5. South Carolina. Beautiful along the ocean, but it can get pretty hot in the summer, too.
6. North Carolina. Same concerns that others have had, especially Charlotte.
7. Georgia. Don't know enough about it.
8. Alabama. Got a friend who works on the U of Alabama campus and says he doesn't stray far from there. Lots of ... shall we say interesting people down there.

Tennessee!! Absolutely Tennessee, beautiful state and friendly people. I would of moved there but a job transfer brought us to Alabama instead.
I do love it here in Alabama. I've been here about 9 months now. The Northeast part of the state is gorgeous. Cheaper cost of living too.
Alabama is one of the poorest states in the country.
A friend of mine moved there last month and says most of the men are scuzzy looking, dirty and unkempt. Oh, and THEY ALL CHEW TOBACCY AND SPIT!!!!!
This post cracks me up!! LMAO
I just moved here and it's nothing like that at all. I've seen more trash up in Michigan in "certain areas" where I lived for 36 years. And NO, I'm not trashing Michigan, I Love Michigan too!!!
I've met nothing but good honest people down here. People that would give you their last dollar

Louisville is sleepy?? When is the last time you have been to the city?
I'm a native of Tennessee, now live in Asheville, have spent time in all the states you've named. Here's how I'd rank them:
1. Asheville. Floridians and New Yorkers are driving the housing prices sky high!
2. Jonesboro, TN. Smaller cheaper version of cosmopolitan Asheville
3. Roanoke, VA. Lovely old town, still reasonably priced
4. Charleston, W.VA. Surprisingly sophisticated and affordable
5. Charleston, SC. Beautiful and historic, but expensive and hot as hell in the summer
The rest of Dixie is too hot for me, and sadly, will probably just become moreso. Water is a real concern for all of us, with our burgeoning development.
Please don't think we all hate "Yankees". Just the ones who call us Rednecks, make fun of our accents and then complain when we don't ask them to dinner!
Hope this helps
Tennessee Sal
But sleepy in a good way. Relaxed, laid back. Low-key.
I'm sure it's not that way around Derby time ... but I never visited during the Derby.
Hmm, in reality, Louisville is maybe somewhat slow paced compared to the coasts (just like all the cities in the SE and Midwest), but it is a very vibrant and active city with several nightlife districts and bars open til 4AM. Its kind of a drinking and partying city for this region of the country. Lots of arts, lots of restaurants, and just a unique culture.
