This is roughly the route my friend and I will be driving come May. Our only stop we have set is Bowling Green to see the Corvette plant. Other than that, we don't know where else to go. We are a couple young college kids looking for something cool. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Helluva road trip. I can't help you while down south, but I would make a longer stop in Saint Louis -- it is quite the city. Cahokia Mounds are across the river in Ill. too. Once you get to Madison (which should also require a stop), take the I-90 to La Crosse and drive up the US61. The river is gourgeous, and the road puts you right along it. A lunch in Winona or Red Wing is always nice.

Looks like you guys have one heck of a road trip planned out. I take it your from South Carolina? Any ways I would check out the Appalachians in eastern Tennessee. My brother and best friend and I are planning a road trip fall of '09. We're going to be heading from Portage, WI down through Kentucky down to Knoxville. Head up towards Johnson City, TN. The visit Boone, NC for a couple of hours. Head back over to JC, TN and head towards New Hampshire. Almost like the Appalachian trail but a drive. Since your heading towards Minnesota you should check out Wisconsin Dells off of I-90 & I-94, There is beautiful Cambrian Stone Bluffs in the Dells. La Crosse is another BEAUTIFUL town.
Good Luck! Please post any pictures you get of eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina. I'm a sucker for those two Geographic areas.
I'm a Minnesotan going to school in SC. I would love to see some mountains, i'll have to see if there are any state parks on the way. I haven't been to the Dells in a while, could be worth checking out again. Thanks!

Better yet, from LaCrosse, take WI 35 up the east bank of the river. It's an even more beautiful drive--two lane, twisty turny, with lots of charming little towns that hug the river bank vs. US 61, which is mostly 4 lane and avoids most of the towns.
Check out Starved Rock State Park (bring your hiking boots) and Matthiessen State Parks in central Illinois and Garden of the Gods in the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois. Neat limestone/sandstone canyons, waterfalls, hills, etc. And be absolutely sure to hit up the Smoky Mountain National Park. Gatlinburg, TN is neat too, but real tourist-y.
