I'll have to see how my kids turn out, as they spent their early childhood in the northeast and later on the west coast. The schools were more advanced back east, but there was much more pressure to go with it. Everything is more relaxed here (we live in Oregon), and I feel like what they learn in school is more holistic, that it isn't all just designed to get them into a selective college. But we do have to contend with larger classes and funding issues.
I'm happier on the west coast, but it really depends on your values and what you want for your kids.
I think I would be most interested in where the family would have the most disposable income. Poor isn't great for anyone. That would probably make me want to avoid the big metro areas on both coasts. COL makes a huge difference.
