Opposite of Colorado, I hate to say it, but Mississippi.

Colorado: High elevation, mountainous, dry, landlocked, largest minority is Hispanic people, always listed as the healthiest/thinnest state, not very religious, leagal weed, civil unions for gay people, governor, state legislature and senators are Democratic.

Mississippi comes in the opposite on all those points.

Yet many people who aren't evangelical or "socially backward" live in Mississippi and enjoy it. I never understood why some folks have to generalize so much. You can live anywhere, associate with people such as yourself and rarely notice the "socially backward." Conservatives do this with California, yet I've been to California several times and enjoyed myself.

Mississippi is a State of extremes. It's full of well off and very poor. The very poor drag Mississippi down in almost every statistical category.

So you debunk one generalization by using another? AZ has some wackos, yes, but many reasonable people live here.

Come to think of it, maybe that wasn't the best choice. I was thinking a densely populated state with a lot of people who speak their mind (what some would call "rude"), and a long history of multiculturalism. I wanted to select New York but didn't want to include upstate areas like Buffalo. Maybe New Jersey, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts would be a better opposite for MN.

There are some wingnuts running the state now but to compare current Arizona to even current Mississippi is absurd. Arizona may not be the most progressive state but it is like Northern California compared to Mississippi. Just a ridiculous comment.
