I am looking to relocate from Pennsylvania in November. I have been comparing cities on here for about the last 6 weeks. I prefer small to medium sized cities, but will not rule out a bigger city or smaller town.
I am looking for someplace where I can rent an efficiency for $500 or less a month, without being too ghetto. And one other criteria. NO SNOW!!! Maybe you can recommend somewhere I have not looked at yet on here.
Phoenix, AZ--tolerant, open-minded people with a live-and-let-live attitude; no one cares what religion you are. Lots and lots of people here eat healthily, shop organically, work out, do yoga, hike, appreciate nature. Very clean as well as low crime for a major city with esp. safe suburbs. Spread out and easily navigable by car, so more accessible to small-town folks. Mild winters, lots of sunshine, no tornadoes/hurricanes/humidity. Beautiful Sonoran desert scenery abounds. Affordable COL, including reasonable home, insurance, gas, and food prices. Close to Flagstaff if you want cooler temps in summer and snow in the winter. Las Vegas, LA, and SD all within driving distance.
If you're looking primarily for smaller to medium-sized cities I would recommend either Winston Salem or Greensboro. Both cities would provide a good selection of one bedroom apartments in decent areas priced under $500 per month. They're both clean/beautiful cities and collectively have a cost of living among the lowest in the US, and in my opinion are the "best bang for the buck" in terms of what they offer in return which is fairly comparable to other mid-sized to large cities in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast where the cost of living is twice as much. In terms of snow it does occur but is rather light (averaging 6 inches over 3.5 months) and certainly not crippling (or lasting on the ground for long).
It has snowed there and they can shut things down for slush, as I've seen that there, but I think you can fine there.
